Romeo and Juliet

Posted : 2 years, 9 months ago on 3 May 2009 05:23 (A review of Conquest Bride (Harlequin Historical))

Baron Varin de Montaigu was sent by King William to investigate his new Saxon subjects for possible treason. Varin knew something of treachery, especially when it came to a woman's traitorous nature. What he didn't expect was to meet Lady Eadita of Thunorslege, a sparkling Saxon elfin woman whose beauty bewitched him even as he was driven crazy by her.

Lady Eadita of Thunorslege hated the Normans with every fiber of her being. She wanted them out of her home and her country at any cost. They had killed her father and turned her brother into an outlaw and her fury still burned bright. When she meets Varin, however, she can't deny the desire that burns between them. But will a secret from Eadita's past turn their mutual desire to ash? I enjoyed this historical romance very much and give it four stars.

Beauty and the Beast

Posted : 3 years ago on 16 January 2009 11:16 (A review of The Fire Rose (The Elemental Masters Fairy Tales))

Impoverished heiress Rosalind Hawkins is a thoroughly modern medieval scholar. When her father dies after losing all the family fortunes in bad investments, Rose has to apply for a position of some sort. What she receives is a request to become governess to a reclusive rail baron's precocious children. When Rose arrives in Jason Cameron's palatial mansion overlooking San Francisco Bay, she discovers that there are no children for her to teach, and the house is filled with invisible servants and a sour agent of Jason Cameron's named Paul du Mond. Her job changes to one that involves reading arcane tomes to Jason Cameron himself - a victim of a mysterious accident.

Jason Cameron is an Elemental Firemaster who has suffered an accident when he tried to perform a spell called the loup-garou - to turn himself into a werewolf. What has become of Jason is that he is now half man-half beast and in danger of losing his mind to the wolf side of himself. As a result, he has dismissed his whole staff except for his Apprentice, and relies on his mystical salamanders to help him.

As Rose reads Jason's books to him, she discovers that she has the potential for Air Mastery herself. She decides that, after necessity demands it, she will become Jason's Apprentice. As Rose and Jason come closer to an answer, they grow closer to each other. When an horrific attack takes place, can Rose trust that Jason is still the man that she loves? I give this historical fantasy five stars.

Happy Christmas

Posted : 3 years ago on 2 January 2009 05:19 (A review of His Lordships Holiday Surprise (Zebra Regency Romance))

Miss Augusta Oglethorpe has always thought that Christmastime is a wonderful time of the year. Her highlight of the Season is the Christmas party that she throws for all her fellow bluestockings. For Augusta, it's a time of food, friends and wonderfully intellectual conversation.

This year, however, her holiday plans have all been thrown into an uproar when her widowed sister, Clarissa suddenly disappears after dropping her three young children off on Augusta's doorstep. Children in tow, an infuriated Augusta arrives at Richard, Marquess of Ardath's house and demands to see her wayward sister.

Richard, recently jilted by Clarissa, is less than jolly when he meets her prim bluestocking of a sister. When he discovers that the faithless Clarissa has totally disappeared, he reluctantly agrees to help Augusta search for her. Now with Christmas fast approaching, Richard and Augusta will learn that Christmas and love is truly a miraculous thing. I give this holiday regency romance five stars.

Magical Family

Posted : 3 years, 1 month ago on 22 December 2008 03:28 (A review of Practical Magic)

For two hundred years the Owens women have been seen as witches - blamed for everything that went wrong in their tiny Massachusetts community. As children, Sally and Gillian Owens suffered the stigma of living with their aunts and thus being viewed as different.

As adults, they sought to escape Massachussetts - Sally by marriage and Gillian by running away. However, sooner or later the Owens sisters must come home as if by magic. I give this story four stars.

Mrs de Winter

Posted : 3 years, 1 month ago on 15 December 2008 07:44 (A review of Rebecca)

When the second Mrs. de Winter marries Maxim de Winter and moves to the windswept Cornish coast, she is somewhat prepared to become famous through marriage. What she's not prepared for is her new home - Manderley - and the spirit of Rebecca - Maxim's first wife - which pervades the house and grounds. She is also not prepared for the reaction of Rebecca's sinister but loyal servant, Mrs. Danvers.

As a presentiment of evil tightens around her, the second Mrs. de Winter must discover what really happened to Rebecca and find out the secrets of Manderley. I give this romantic suspense five stars.

Thirty-one year old Noah Calhoun comes back to North Carolina from World War II haunted by memories of a girl he had lost fourteen years earlier. Allie Nelson is twenty-nine and about to marry a wealthy lawyer, but before she marries she is determined to find the boy who stole her heart so long ago.

Allie and Noah have a deep and abiding love for one another. Surely such a love can turn tragedy into triumph and outlast even life itself. I give this romance five stars.

The Wizard and His Apprentice

Posted : 3 years, 1 month ago on 30 November 2008 08:43 (A review of The Wizard of Seattle)

When Richard Merlin first sets eyes on Serena Smyth - the bedraggled sixteen-year-old runaway who shows up on his doorstep - he can sense the barely restrained power within her. Guided by pure instinct, Serena has come over three hundred miles in order to find a Master Wizard to teach her a forbidden art. For Serena's sake Richard will teach her his art, despite a taboo so ancient that the reasons for its existence are all but forgotten.

Nine years later, Richard never expects to risk all that he had and all that he is in order to save Serena, and in the process find a love none of his kind had ever experienced. Richard and Serena's quest will bring them back in time to a lost civilization called Atlantis and will test their faith in and love for each other. I give this time travel romance four stars.

The Knights of Christmas

Posted : 3 years, 2 months ago on 28 November 2008 08:27 (A review of Knights of Christmas (Harlequin Historicals, No 387))

This is an anthology of three novellas that each deal with the magic of the Christmas season. My favorite story was 'A Wish For Noel' in which a feisty orphan called Noel has the twelve days of the Christmas Season to get her world-weary guardian, Sir Benedick, whom she has loved since she was a child, to fall in love with her. I give this book three stars.
